Douglas F. Bates
Who is Doug Bates?
Kevin McDowell from Indiana shares with the group stories about the man he personally knew at the 2018 Annual Conference in Denver, Co.
Douglas F. Bates
Douglas F. Bates was a respected education attorney and the director of school law and legislation for the State Office of Education in Utah. Mr. Bates was a former Provo police officer who once oversaw education of youth in custody. He was devoted to helping at risk youth and pushed bills through legislation to promote this cause.
Doug, as he was known by our colleagues, entered education in 1966 as a 6th grade teacher in Granite School District. He went on to receive a law degree from the University of Utah and a doctorate in education fro the University of Kansas, Lawrence. He received awards from NCOSEA and Utah Legislature. His life and work was dedicated to education and students.
Doug passed away at the age of sixty on May 22, 2000, following a four year battle with pancreatic cancer. He is greatly missed by NCOSEA as an avid member and supporter of our members. He was a colleague, a mentor, and a friend. Several Awards have been named in his honor including an award given by NCOSEA.
Doug Bates Distinguished Service Award
The awarding of the Douglas F. Bates Distinguished Service Award is a bittersweet event where we remember a great friend to NCOSEA and to children everywhere, and at the same time pause to reflect upon the depth of talent and wealth of character among the NCOSEA membership. It gives NCOSEA members singular satisfaction to remember Doug Bates by honoring one whose example squarely meets the Award criteria (“our life’s work and leisure should be infused with gentleness, civility, and good humor, and that our life’s work should at all times be about protecting children and improving their future prospects.”)
